Marjorie Strider
March 8th - April 2nd, 2011
We are pleased to present more than 40 paintings, reliefs, and sculptures by Marjorie Strider from the 1960s, the 1970s, and today. These depictions of pinup girls, outsized fruits and vegetables, and emblems of consumer culture exemplify the sly wit of this artist long associated with Pop art. Throughout her oeuvre, Strider has explored form, space, and color in with an exuberance that continues today.

Luciano Ventrone: Beyond the Veil
October 7th - October 30th, 2010
“Luciano Ventrone: Beyond the Veil” presents more than twenty recent still lifes, nudes, and seascapes that explore the perception of reality. Luciano Ventrone’s compositions depict their subjects with great clarity—a lucidity that both illuminates the subjects and also suggests a transcendant otherworldliness.

Eduard Steichen: Four paintings in Context
December 2nd - January 17th, 2004
Hollis Taggart Galleries is pleased to present four paintings by one of the twentieth century’s most seminal artistic figures, Eduard Steichen. Primarily known for his contribution to the field of photography, Steichen was also a gifted painter. The artist’s fateful decision in the early 1920s to destroy several decades-worth of easel paintings makes the four works on view an extraordinary, rare find - as the paintings that have survived until today are mostly found within the collections of notable museums.

Gallery Selections
August 1st - September 17th, 2008
Hollis Taggart Galleries is pleased to present a selection of our recent acquisitions of twentieth-century art. The works on view trace the major trends of American modernism, from the landscapes of Alfred Maurer, to the colorful, jazz-infused abstractions of Stuart Davis, to the Post-war, abstract expressionist paintings of Hans Hofmann, Michael Goldberg, and Theodoros Stamos.

Middleton Manigault, Visionary Modernist
May 21st - July 19th, 2002
“Middleton Manigault, Visionary Modernist” is the first major exhibition to present the eclectic, highly personal creations of this previously neglected modernist master. It features approximately 50 rarely exhibited works, including oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, etchings, wood sculpture, and ceramics, and showcases masterpieces loaned from both public and private collections across the United States and Canada, including several seminal works such as “The Clown,” which was exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show.

Bill Scott: Process and Continuity
May 18th - July 9th, 2004
Hollis Taggart is pleased to announce Bill Scott: Process and Continuity, and exhibition of recent works by contemporary Philadelphia-based artist Bill Scott, on view May 18 to July 9. This exhibition, curated by Vivian Bullaudy, Director of Hollis Taggart Galleries, continues Hollis Taggart Galleries’ commitment to bring to light the Philadelphia tradition and its enduring significance in American art history. Scott’s painting lay within the cultural continuum of the Philadelphia colorist tradition, passed on to him and his contemporaries through mentors such as painters Quita Brodhead and Jane Piper, who were themselves students of Arthur B. Carles, the pioneer of Philadelphia modernism.
Bill Scott: Looking Through
March 1st - March 31st, 2007
We are very pleased to present a second exhibition of Bill Scott’s rich, vibrant artwork. Comprised of more than thirty of his intricate, lush paintings and prints, this exhibition showcases his recent work and presents the two media together for the first time.

March 12th - April 4th, 2009
Hollis Taggart Galleries is pleased to announce “Bill Scott: Recent Paintings,” our third exhibition of new works by contemporary Philadelphia-based artist Bill Scott, on view March 12 to April 4. Scott’s paintings rest within the cultural continuum of the Philadelphia colorist tradition, passed on to him and his contemporaries through mentors such as the painters Jane Piper, students of Arthur B. Carles, leading pioneer of Philadelphia modernism.
