Jerome Blum: Journeys into Color
October 25th - November 17th, 2001
Hollis Taggart Galleries is pleased to present Jerome Blum: Journeys into Color, a collection of brilliantly hued paintings executed by the noted Chicago born Modernist Jerome Blum. Infusing his canvases with a saturated palette of Fauve and Post-Impressionist color, Blum turned the products of his peripatetic wanderings into striking Modernist essays. Cuba, China, and the South Seas, as well as the requisite European tour, most notably to France, introduced him to the work of Gaugin, Matisse, and Cézanne, ultimately encouraging him to incorporate vital new elements into his still life, landscape, and figural depictions.
Max Kuehne: Artist and Craftsman
May 24th - June 23rd, 2001
A landmark exhibition that bridges the gap between the fine and decorative arts will be held at Hollis Taggart Galleries. “Max Kuehne: Artist and Craftsman” is a unique presentation of more than 30 works by this talented and imaginative artist and artisan. Max Kuehne (1880-1968), in addition to being a prolific painter, was an accomplished craftsman, who mastered antique techniques and combined them with varied influences from around the world. Through his refined style of decorative incised painting on objects and furniture, screens, chests, boxes, and even doors became his “canvases.”
