Justine Otto at Galerie Maurer, Frankfurt, Germany 'A Groupshow'

June – July 2025

Gallery artist Justine Otto is presenting a solo exhibition titled A Groupshow at Galerie Maurer, in Frankfurt, Germany.

"In my painting, I utilize traditional genre concepts from Western art and transform them into new interpretations. The general theme is people and group dynamics, both viewed through past eras and in light of the current global situation. [...] These themes also form the background of my current Crowds series, in which crowds of people are still partially recognizable, but are overlaid with abstract layers that are often reminiscent of decorative elements and patterns. These layers merge with one another in the painting process and have both a destructive and creative effect, with continuous references to classical and modern painting.

My work oscillates between abstraction and figuration. Both elements are closely interwoven and appear equally valuable. My painting process usually begins with drawings and collages, which serve as a framework or idea and are brought to life through painting. The themes develop like a common thread from one painting to the next. Technically, I employ various methods: spraying, wet-on-wet painting, masking, scraping, spatulas, dissolving with turpentine, and stamping. I have used various tools and techniques in Over the years, I've developed these techniques and incorporated them into my repertoire. I continually experiment with different supports and materials.

In addition to painting, I also create sculptures from found materials. These sculptures are intended to expand my work into the space and offer new perspectives and inspiration for my painting."
